Green Street Project: Bringing Charm Back to a San Francisco Living Room

At Together Home Design Studio, one of our favorite transformations is the Green Street Project living room — a space that went from layered, modernized finishes to a charming, timeless, and classic interior. Our clients came to us with a clear vision: they wanted a home that felt original, warm, and inviting, honoring the architectural intent of this 1929 San Francisco apartment.

The Before: Modern Updates That Hid the Original Character

The previous owners had made the space feel more modern by removing architectural details like crown molding, wainscotting, and chair rails. The limestone fireplace, once a subtle centerpiece, was covered with multiple layers of paint — one of which was a bold purple. The overall effect was a home that felt less like its original self and more like a generic modern apartment.

Restoring Original Charm

Our approach for the Green Street living room focused on bringing back the architectural charm that had been lost:

  • Crown molding, wainscotting, and chair rail: These classic elements were reintroduced to restore the room’s proportions and elegance.

  • Fireplace restoration: Fox Marble carefully removed layers of paint from the limestone fireplace, revealing its original beauty and giving it a fresh, luminous presence in the room.

  • Light and bright paint: Walls were painted in a soft, airy palette to enhance natural light and create a welcoming backdrop for the furnishings.

Classic, Comfortable, and Layered Interiors

To complement the restored architecture, we focused on furniture and finishes that echoed timeless style:

  • Neutral and airy furniture: A white linen sofa and other light-toned pieces keep the room bright and approachable.

  • Grounding walnut tones: Traditional walnut furniture adds depth and warmth to the living room, balancing the light neutrals.

  • Textured layers: Plush throws, classic rugs, and thoughtfully layered accessories create a cozy, lived-in feeling without cluttering the space.

The Result: A Timeless San Francisco Living Room

By restoring the architectural details and layering in classic furniture and textures, the Green Street living room now feels like it could have been original to the 1929 building — only better. The space is light, airy, elegant, and inviting, reflecting our clients’ desire for a home that’s both beautiful and comfortable.

At Together Home Design Studio, we believe that thoughtful restoration paired with curated interiors can bring a home’s original charm to life while making it feel fresh and personal. The Green Street Project is a perfect example of how we approach each project with care, attention to detail, and a love for classic design.
